The Professors of Picas
The past week has seen the debut of two type families so smart, they make Harvard grads look like first-graders.

Take Liza Pro. From the type foundry Underware, Liza may seem a little shallow on first blush -- all curvy script and flirty ornamentals. But underneath that attractive exterior is a fonty brain that analyzes your text and swaps in 4,000 hand-crafted characters as it sees fit. It's so deep, it even comes with its own user guide.

And then there's Rebus Script, from Ascender Corp. Like Liza Pro, Rebus Script relies on OpenType's Contextual Alternates, but it creates rebus puzzles by replacing certain words or syllables with pictures.

And so what if, like me, you went to a state university, or maybe you didn't go to college at all. With fonts this smart, who needs a fancy degree?
