Drop shadows, feathered effects, and knockouts are all considered transparencies in addition to opacity controls and blend modes.

pdf is encrypted and therefore unprintable
Why is the pdf of "Displaying Transparency in InDesign 2.0" encrypted? I've never noticed that with any of the other articles posted on this site. I'd like to be able to print it for future reference.
