This really is a great trick! I just used it on a dark b&w photo and it significantly improved the image.

Thanks for the tut... I saw it in MacWorld Oct. 2003. I use Photoshop regularly in my business but somehow had not heard of this procedure. Though it seems somewhat similar to noise reduction via use of the blue channel.
lighten harsh shadows
I read this article in MacWorld magazine. I followed the steps in the article but ran into a problem when I was unable to invert the image or channel as described in step 4.
Invert was greyed out... so I am stuck. Please tell me what I am missing. I tried several times.
