Ill 10 is consistent ... it consistently crashes
It's either a font issue or some other nonsense, last stable version was v.8
If it's slow, it sucks.
Sighhhhh...I'm sure glad I didn't pay for this upgrade. Because if I had, I'd drive all the way over to Adobe and kick someone's a$$. It may be great and grand, but it's slow as sh*t on a G4 733 1GB RAM machine that is 4 months old. And other reviews on the web seem to indicate that there are plenty of people experiencing the same thing. I will be reloading 8 tonight. Since that seems to work pretty well.
ill 10 on OSX is a useless
open some of the sample art included with the software and you may see what i mean. the software is SLOW. so slow the software is basically useless.
i opened the sample file (in the illustrator folder:sample files:sample art) Flower.ai, a great use of gradient mesh and the application practically came to a halt. after rebooting into 9.2.2 it performed fine.
i hope it's only my computer (mac os 10.1.2 on an 867); some sort of conflict or something. but they need an update to fix osX performance, QUICK.
i've seen posts regarding the prefs being lost but haven't come across that problem myself; that poster has my sympathies.
good comprehensive review
I've been using .ai since version3 but i haven't expored all the new fetaures in 10 yet. I am dispointed in the performance such as markeying and drag resizing but also on slection objects such as outlined type, when I select the word and eyedropper sample another color in doesn't take in the color. I have to get the color chip or paint bucket and drop the chip or pourt the color into each letter. What am I missing here? And as for performance, I'm running OS 9.2.1 on (1) a G4/dual 500mzh w/ a gb of ram and on a G4/733 w/ 756mb ram.
editorial comment
I won't quibble with any of the substance in this review. But I'm shocked at the number of grammatical, spelling and typographic errors in it. I expected a higher editorial standard. :(
Hmmm...
As an editor, I just HATE to see this kind of response. I could explain how errors slipped in, but it doesn't matter. Apologies. You're right. Our standards are higher than that. BTW, I think I've fixed them all.
Thanks for the feedback,

Illustrator 10 is outstanding, but does not support OpenType!
I agree about the new and improved resources. But to became a 'perfect' 10, Illustrator must support OpenType. As an all-new release, this is a major failure.
Besides this, I also don't like the way Illustrator applies measurements (from bottom to top, the reverse than InDesign, LiveMotion, Photoshop and almost all graphic applications).
There is also two minor lackings: easy-to-apply arrows and endings to lines (InDesign already has this) and a good mask tool.
illustrator 10.0 not ready / AI 10.0 Prefs won't 'stick'
After just an hour or so "riding" the new version of Adobe Illustrator, a major bug became obvious: At least in MacOS 9.2, Illsutrator 10 won't save neither its own prefs. nor custom positions for the tool boxes. Naturally, the Adobe tech I spoke with knew "nothing" about this issue and it "had" to be something not working "right" in my Mac...
On the other hand, the Adobe Forums site register dozens of complaints about this issue (topic: "Preferences in AI10 won't 'stick'")
To me, the ability to customize ONCE my working environment is primordial. I cannot imagine why Adobe did not thoroughly test this basic function of one of its most widely used apps.
Of course, over the years we have seen how Adobe, mostly motivated by the pure fear of competition -so it seams to me, consistently releases apps. like Illustrator and Photoshop that only "become" ready after one or two updates (i.e. Photoshop 6.0.1, Illustrator 9.0.2) totally disregarding the obligations, headaches and possible loss of clientele of users who, like me, expect Adobe to provide us with a top tool to generate our work... And remember: I am not talking about some "ultra new feature" which has not been ever incorporated into the program, no; I am simply talking about setting preferences. Ironically, this lack of attention to detail and poor craftsmanship is what may motivate users to switch to other programs, not that Adobe is taking "too long" to release a new version.
